We have went on quite a few road trips this summer and each time I had a snack pack ready for the kids. We have a Safeway about 5 minutes from our house so I always head over there to stock up before our trips. My mom lives an hour and a half away, so not a huge undertaking, but we always need snacks for the trek. While at Safeway I grabbed Capri Suns, Lifesavers, Oreo’s, mini rice cakes, Cheetos, M&Ms.
For this trip we were all ready to go with all our bags packed but I forgot the snacks!
Safeway had everything we needed. These mini rice cakes are in the chip aisle so I let them pick out which flavor they wanted and they went with caramel.
Now the only thing left was to head home, grab their lunch boxes, and fill with all these tasty treats!
I have a lunchbox for each of my kids and fill with these snacks. The catch is each kid gets to have all their snacks in their lap. But once they eat them all they do not get replenished so they have to ration out their own food. We also have to make the drive back in 1 day so that’s 3 hours in the car and they must have enough snacks for both trips.
I just ration out the snacks in resealable bags so everyone gets the same amount. At the bottom of the box I also pack a PB&J sandwich.
If we are going on a longer trip, I will just bring the entire box of Capri Suns and let everyone know how many each they get.
These kids thought this was fun because they didn’t have to share with their siblings and had to make their food decisions by themselves. It might be a tiny lesson we were teaching them but it’s teaching them to make their own decisions and what the consequences are if they gobble up all their food in the first 30 minutes.
We took a 17 hour drive this summer and the kids did so great. Of course they can get rowdy or cranky but these 2 holding hands melted my heart and that is what family road trips are all about!
